Welcome to the World of Buttersby™!
Buttersby ™ is a fictional alpaca. What is an alpaca? Well, an alpaca is a member of the camelid family. They are much smaller than a camel , however, and smaller still than a llama. You might have seen llamas in cartoons (like “The Emperor’s New Groove”) or know that llamas have been used for
centuries as pack animals. Alpacas are not pack animals, nor are they to be ridden like camels. But they originally are from South America (mainly Peru, Chile and Bolivia) view map where they still roam the countryside in high mountain areas, like the Andes mountains.
At Diamond Triple C Ranch, however, we raise domesticated alpacas. They live in pens on our ranches in Bath County, VA and near Tulsa, OK. There are now literally hundreds of alpaca ranchers in the United States, because alpacas started being imported in 1993. In Peru, most alpacas are white in color, though many breeders in the United States breed for color . . . and alpacas can come in a variety of beautiful colors! We have alpacas that range from white to black, and pretty much everything in between (grey, rose grey, brown, fawn, tan, beige, and so forth). In 1998 it was determined that alpacas could no longer be imported to the USA. So now we raise our alpacas from that beginning imported stock, and the “new” alpacas are strictly Americans! (This is much like the settlers or immigrants who came from all over the world to live in the United States, and now their children are American citizens.)
Buttersby™ has a new book which will premier in November 2006 called The Cavern of Babel. You can click on the link to the book and check out her adventures. It is written by Albert Packard and illustrated by Shawn Boyles. It is available through our store and through other alpaca ranchers. Perhaps there is one near where you live. You will want to read all about Buttersby™ and her friend Meander™ who she meets along the way. Who is Meander™? He’s another alpaca – but he looks totally different from Buttersby™. Meander™ is a suri alpaca, and Buttersby ™ is a huacaya. Click on the ‘PACA FACTS page to find out the difference!
